We may have lightly chuckled at Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II as flying cars circled overhead and food hydrators turned a dehydrated pizza into a steaming-hot meal in two seconds flat. But we’re starting to see that maybe not all of those unrealistic future gadgets were that far off…
Enter Super Cruise, General Motors’ available hands-free driver assistance technology — a feature that seems like something straight from the future.
But this advanced technology has actually been around since 2017, allowing drivers to sit back, take their hands off the wheel, and relax.
You may have some questions, such as: What exactly is Super Cruise technology? Can you actually take your hands off the wheel? And, most importantly: Which Chevy vehicles are equipped with this space-age tech?
Let’s find out!
What is Chevy Super Cruise?
Wherever you’re headed, Chevy Super Cruise is designed to enhance your time behind the wheel, providing a more convenient and comfortable driving experience.
Available for use on compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada, Chevy Super Cruise lets you take your hands off the steering wheel, in the right conditions, while your vehicle continues driving. With this impressive technology, your vehicle can steer, accelerate, and brake as needed.
Available Chevy Super Cruise functions include:
- Automatic Lane Change
When there’s a slower vehicle traveling in front of you, your Chevy can automatically change lanes while you sit back and let it do the work.
- Turn Signal Activated Lane Change
When you want to change lanes, you can tap your turn signal, and your Chevy will change lanes for you when the coast is clear.
- Hands-On Steering Assist
This feature helps you stay centered in your lane. In the meantime, Adaptive Cruise Control works to keep you at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- Expanded Google built-in Compatibility
Google Maps can help you maximize your use of Super Cruise by finding compatible roads, letting you know how much time in minutes you can use Super Cruise during your journey, and selecting your ideal route for you.
How Chevrolet Super Cruise Actually Works
Going hands-free behind the wheel feels nerve-wracking because it goes against everything we’ve been taught about safety in the driver’s seat. However, Super Cruise is designed to work with the driver.
Thanks to a combination of real-time cameras, computers, sensors, GPS data, and precision maps, Chevy Super Cruise makes hands-free driving possible. As an example, the system uses a Lane Sensing Camera to help keep you in your lane and works with Adaptive Cruise Control to keep your vehicle at a set distance from the vehicle ahead.
But hands-free doesn’t mean you can take a nap or read a book while in the driver’s seat.
Drivers can rest their hands, but they still need to stay alert in case they need to take the wheel again. If your attention appears to slacken, you’ll receive a series of warnings, and eventually, Super Cruise will bring your vehicle to a stop, turn on the hazard lights, and alert OnStar.
Super Cruise can only be used on specific roads, but the exciting news is that there are now over 600,000 miles of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada for you to take advantage of.
